Isle of Skye and Lochalsh
The Lochalsh area has much rugged mountain terrain, but also some peaceful and sheltered villages such as Plockton, Duirinish and Glenelg - the area that inspired Gavin Maxwell's "Ring of Bright Water". Eilean Donan Castle, on the Road to Skye, is perhaps the best know and most pictured castle in the Highlands, with such a classic setting that it is almost cliched.
The Isle of Skye is by far the largest of the Inner Hebridies and has everything from the wild Atlantic coastline in the West, the more sheltered Sleat Peninsula in the South and the jagged Cuillin Hills, with their" Tolkienesque" forms. The island also delivers on all of the history, romance and culture the is synonymous with its name.
An area of the Highlands not to be missed.
